Electives

The electives can either be a change from the main subject or a subject that gives you an in-depth study or a new approach to the main subject.

The range of electives is large and varied!

We emphasize that you should have a lot to choose from when selecting electives. That's why we offer many different subjects and courses. We have around 30 electives you can choose from during the year. The electives change quite a bit from year to year, depending on which subjects the students want and which electives the teachers can teach. The final range of electives is presented at the start of the school year and throughout the year.

The electives are organized so that you choose subjects for a period and then you can take a new subject in the next elective period. We have electives during the day and electives in the afternoon.

Here you can read about some of the electives we have had in previous years. We don't have the same electives every year, but this is a selection of the subjects we have offered.

Social media for Sund in general

The environment and sustainability are an important part of daily life at Sund. By sharpening our analytical skills, we look at how we can help take the world a step in the right direction. We explore questions, issues and dilemmas related to the environment and sustainable development. There will be lectures and discussions, and perhaps we'll take a trip out to see examples in nature.

Here you can really unfold yourself! This elective is open to everyone. Maybe you've always wanted to try playing drums or bass guitar? Here's your chance! You can borrow instruments from us if you don't bring your own. If you've played in a band before, it's great to do it again at folk high school, with professional musicians as teachers.

Dance - be it salsa, merengue, cha-cha-cha, hip hop, modern dance, swing or old-time dance? This is one or more electives that we have had for a long time at Sund. It's popular, and not least, it's fun. Anyone can participate in the elective and we start at beginner level.

Do you know something you'd like to teach others? Or maybe you want to learn something new together with other students? We have student-led electives every year, and there is great diversity here.

Examples of student-led electives that have been:

  • Album time/listening
  • Dance (swing, fridans, modern dance)
  • Debate technique
  • Poetry club
  • Film club
  • Fly tying
  • French club
  • Improv theater
  • Karaoke
  • Climate clock
  • Creative table
  • Origami
  • Perling
  • Chess
  • Spanish or other languages
  • Knitting of the Sundjumper
  • Swimming
  • Swing
  • volleyball

There's a lot of variety here and the students enjoy taking part in each other's electives. It's a great opportunity to try something completely new and share your hobbies with others.

Photography

This is a creative and open elective course where you play with cameras, themes and motifs. You get a simple introduction to basic techniques. The most important thing is that you get to try out taking photos in practice. This course is taught by a photography teacher who guides and gives feedback to the students.

We have our own outdoor grass pitch right next to the school. There we play soccer together to have fun. This elective is great if you want to get outdoors and have fun with students from all over the school.

Floorball

Floorball is fun! We use the gym and divide into teams that play against each other. It's a great and fun way to stay in shape, and an intensive elective that gives you lots of energy.

This elective combines two elements: jazz and simple cooking. Jazz teachers share their skills in salsa, dip and other simple hand foods, while you listen to different types of jazz music. An enjoyable elective where you can take inspiration and tips for life after Sund, both in the kitchen and in the living room.

Kayak tour

Sund is located by the fjord, and the location is ideal for kayaking. Here, you'll have the opportunity to take a basic sea course and learn paddling and rescue techniques. Once we have received training, we go on a paddling trip together. We have our own kayaks and equipment, and if you take a kayaking course here, you can borrow a kayak!

Do you want to get fit, or do you want to stay fit and active? Then you've come to the right elective. Here there is a high tempo and the opportunity to get really fit. There will be interval training on the slopes around Sund, running and strength training. Bring good sneakers that you can wear outdoors. Training clothes for outdoor use are also necessary.

At the climbing wall

Here you have the opportunity to take a climbing card, or to climb more if you already have climbing experience. We'll head to the nearest climbing hall and receive training from experienced instructors. When the course participants start to become experienced, there will be opportunities to climb outside. The area around Levanger in particular is known for its excellent climbing opportunities.

This course costs a little, but it is far cheaper than taking it outside Sund. All equipment is included in the price.

We collaborate with Nils Aas Kunstverksted , which offers art electives for students. This can be slightly different from year to year, but there is the opportunity to work with both form and surface. Perhaps we try our hand at drawing, ceramics or other art forms. At Nils Aas they are creative and skilled.

Learn how to use a potter's wheel and shape beautiful objects in clay! We have our own kiln for firing ceramics, so you'll really get to try out this wonderful craft.

This is the elective for those who love music. The teachers on the jazz line at Sund have the elective subject listening, and it's a subject they are happy to have. We listen to different types of music and try to hear new things in the music that we have not been aware of before. We listen to connections and similarities between music that may initially seem very different, we listen to music we haven't heard before, and maybe we get some new favorites. This is a useful subject, whether you study music or not.

We choose literature that no one has read before, and we read both in plenary and individually between elective classes. This makes it exciting to meet to discuss and talk about the books we read. Do you love to read? Then maybe this could be an elective you can enjoy.

We have good food and talented chefs at Sund. They'll be happy to teach some great dishes to those of you who will soon be doing all the cooking yourselves. Being able to cook is important, but it's also fun - and really good! We're very proud of this elective, and of course we make a lot of organic food.

a discussion takes place

The aim is to contribute to the understanding of processes and events within ecosystems by studying the conditions for sustainable knowledge of such systems. The realization that the whole is more than the sum of its parts is central to ecophilosophical thinking. We learn the main features of ecophilosophy as developed by Arne Næss and Sigmund Kvaløy Sætreng.

At Sund we have a great darkroom with space for 6-7 students to work simultaneously. We develop film and copy images from negatives. Darkroom electives give you an introduction to copying images yourself. It's fun, educational and time flies in the darkroom!

Photo paper and developing fluid may cost a little, but we'll share the costs, so it won't be too much. You should have, or borrow, an analog camera or film that you can develop.

Political songs have been used in many contexts and in most countries in the world. In this elective, we sing political songs and learn about the situations in which they were and are used.

We melt pewter and create shapes in sand and other materials. We also make our own glass beads and use our creativity to create beautiful jewelry - just the way you want it.

It's great to learn Spanish! We emphasize oral Spanish and start with the most basic vocabulary and sentences, and then we see how far we get. Suitable for both complete beginners and those who know a little. We organize the teaching to best suit everyone. For those lines that travel to Spanish-speaking countries (Rainforest and Solidarity North-South), it's great to build on what they've learned on the study trip.

In the writing course, we work with fiction texts in most genres. You will be given assignments that stimulate and challenge your creativity and desire to write.

On the snowy slopes

This elective takes place outside in the winter, where we will be active and have fun. There may be an opportunity for a trip to the slalom slope, sledging or other winter activities. Fresh air and physical activity are important, and this is combined with fun and games. The elective is slightly dependent on snow conditions.

Sund has a separate weight room available for students. Here we meet and do strength training under the guidance of a teacher. We also do strength exercises without equipment and use mats in the gym. It's very popular, and there's room for lots of people. It's great to be able to meet and get in better shape!

Bicycle gang

We experience the local area from the seat of our bikes, exploring trails and smaller roads that provide exciting experiences. We also spend time repairing the bike and learn simple tricks for repairing and maintaining the bike.

Do you like to draw or want to learn to like it? Here you will meet others who enjoy drawing and are interested in learning more about drawing. You will be guided by a professional illustrator who has this elective.

We start with wool straight from the sheep and explore the properties of the wool and we see what we can make from the wool. The students get to card wool, comb wool and spin yarn on hand stones. We also test how different types of wool have different properties and try to spin wool into jewelry. Gunhild from Stiklestad National Cultural Center has this elective.

This is a practical elective course where you learn practical things you need to know when you're living on your own, in a shared apartment or in a dormitory. It's usually the caretakers who do this elective with the students, and they show you their best tricks. For example, you can learn how to change tires on your car, gardening, using tools and simple repairs. Very useful to take away with you!

wood workshop

Visit Kai who works at Stiklestad in his workshop. Introduction to woodcarving and you get to try your hand at simple woodcarving tasks. The aim is for you to complete a woodcarving project that you can take home with you. Kai wants you to feel a sense of accomplishment when you work.

At Sund we love nature! We explore the local area and go on easy walks near the school. We stop, enjoy nature and the silence, cook on a campfire and explore the plants around us. This is an elective that anyone can join, regardless of experience or fitness level. It's enjoyable and a popular elective.

Volleyball camp

Sund has its own gym and is a great place to play volleyball! Sometimes we divide into teams and play together, while other times we learn basic hitting techniques and have some technical training. We can also travel to tournaments together if we feel like it. Volleyball is a very popular elective. When the weather and season are right, we can go to the sand volleyball facility and play there.

Yoga

Yoga electives always fill up fast. We teach different forms of yoga that vary slightly from year to year. This is an elective where you come as you are, and it doesn't matter if you've done yoga before or not. The teaching is designed so that everyone does the exercises at their own pace, and as hard as they can. We have yoga mats at Sund, but you can also bring your own mat.

As a student, your wallet is tight, but that doesn't matter when you can make some nice gifts instead! We sew, weave, nail, braid in shavings, make small things in leather, paper and fabric.

Here you can sew your own pair of lovely sheepskin slippers.

This is for those of you who want to learn how to set up a loom, and of course weave. We weave wool blankets, tablecloths, rugs, scarves and much more.
