We also offer the course Fine art photography (annual courses):
Get an insight into photography as an art form! We seek to educate fearless photographers technically, content-wise and aesthetically. Spend a semester learning about and understanding fine art photography. You'll learn basic and advanced photography techniques, studio work and genre understanding.
We take a closer look at how photography can be used to say something, show something and mean something. Content and aesthetics in perfect harmony. We have digital teaching, but also darkroom and analog photography electives, so you can explore that too. The year is characterized by great freedom. Here you can develop as a photographer and create a portfolio that you can use, for example, for applications to higher photography and art programs. You can come with no prior knowledge or as an experienced photographer.
In brief:
- Genre understanding
- Technical and aesthetic understanding
- Study trip to Japan

More about the course
We will work on this:
The year starts with lessons in camera technique, composition, image editing, understanding light and everything you need to be able to use a camera to express yourself. We then go on to explore the genre of fine art photography and look at the different approaches we can take to the subject. The days are characterized by great freedom and we encourage you to work interdisciplinary. So if you want to take a closer look at collage, drawing and video, you are free to do so. We go out to locations, visit galleries and institutions and showcase our work through exhibitions. We use in-class discussion as a way to develop you as a photographer in a supportive classroom environment.
Through introductions to photographers and ways of approaching the subject, you will develop a photographic language and practice recognizing and reproducing artistic expressions. We have a beautiful view from the classroom, a darkroom and a well-equipped studio that facilitates professional immersion. We take on customer assignments and exhibit our work as part of the timetable. We make it possible for you to do an internship during the school year so that you can try your hand at the subject outside Sund. You have a great deal of influence on the timetable and help to create your own school year.
At Sund you get to meet fellow students with different interests. We have 7 very different courses which we believe is a strength for fotolinja! You hear jazz from the windows, the UN debates, dinner comes from sport fishing every now and then, we also have courses such as Historical handicraft, Rainforest, Street food and Expedition and adventure. This provides an everyday life that gives the opportunity to learn about more than photography, here are teachers and students with broad knowledge that is used in common subjects and electives. The community is nurtured and we work for a school day that challenges and engages. We are an old folk high school that values school values, conversations at eye level and participation.
So welcome here if you want to immerse yourself in art photography
Study trip to Japan
We travel to Japan as a study destination for 3 weeks. Here you will get to know a strong visual culture and have the opportunity to create a photographic project in a culture that is perceived as different and inspiring. We create the trip together. Japan offers galleries, inspiring streets, food, karaoke and tired legs.
We're out and about for much of the day, exploring what Tokyo has to offer.
We place great emphasis on giving you the opportunity to work on developing a high-quality portfolio throughout the year. We use some of these images to create exhibitions of various kinds, publish them in local newspapers and, towards the end of the year, we create a joint photo magazine.
The magazines show a lot of what we work with and what you can learn during a year at the photo school at Sund.
Here you can see the photo magazine the students made in the school year 2022-23:

Our teacher has 6 years of education in the subject from England and Norway and has run her own photography business for years. Janne works with her own work (see jannesvit.com) in addition to teaching and has held courses and workshops at vocational schools and for the private sector in addition to working at Sund. Janne is passionate about the subject!
We had a great class and an incredibly talented and warm teacher in Janne. We got to share so many wonderful moments with each other that I'm so happy I have now. Being able to share Japan with such a great group is something I'm so glad I got to do!

What former students say
The year at Sund can be exactly what you need it to be, at least it was for me!
