Joint courses and joint trips

Common subjects

In the weekly timetable, about half of the time is set aside for core subjects. The rest of the time is spent on electives and common subjects that cut across the school's courses.

We offer varied teaching with a lot of activity in the common subjects.

The four central themes in the common subjects

We have four central themes that we spend a lot of time on and which form the core of the common subject teaching at Sund folk high school .

Sometimes things need to be said, even if it means criticizing prevailing trends, people or institutions with power. We focus on political and social issues that need to be discussed. You'll work on justifying and presenting your views and opinions in a way that gives them weight and significance. In this way, you can emerge as an engaged, critical and aware citizen.

We are surrounded by a diverse cultural life, and we will explore what exists and what it does to us. Through experiences and joint reflection on various artistic and aesthetic expressions, students will have the opportunity to expand their cultural horizons and discuss issues related to art and culture.

In this subject, students work with issues related to climate, sustainability and the environment, based on their own local environment. By studying our surroundings, we try to create an understanding and awareness of the environmental and climate challenges facing the world. There will be lectures and discussions, but also short walks around the local area. We will spend time getting to know and love the nature that surrounds us.

Everyone has a body, and we need to use it. In this subject, there is a wide range of activities that all have in common that the students are active. The program is designed so that everyone, regardless of physical fitness and prior knowledge, gets their body moving and is physically active. You will gain energy, improve concentration and be happier.

In brief:

  • Everyday school life is much more than the program-specific classes
  • Common subjects are taken by all students together, regardless of their main program.
  • Elective subjects are taken by students from different programs, forming new groups outside their main program.

Example of common subjects:

  • Morning assembly
  • Pupils' time
  • School choir
  • Fellestur to Sør-Gæslingan
  • Kitchen service
  • Physically active
  • Saturday school
  • Sundays

Social media for Sund in general

At folk high school , classes are usually held on Saturdays. At Sund , we use Saturday school for joint events and to work on common subjects. Saturday school can be both theoretical and practical, both serious and a lot of fun!

Before the study trip, we spend a few Saturdays preparing for the study trips, among other things by reflecting on how we can best make trips where we meet people in a completely different culture than our own.

School hours on Saturday are from 10:00 to 14:00.

Living at folk high school is like moving away from home, but not entirely on your own. Part of life is cleaning the room, washing clothes, cooking and cleaning up after yourself.

At Sund folk high school , all meals are communal meals, and at these meals there are always some students on kitchen duty. They help put out the food and clean up after the meal.

All students are on kitchen duty during the school year.

  • Morning assembly - a good start to the day
  • Student hour - the student council has weekly time with all students
  • School choir - in a few hectic weeks before Family Day, we have a school choir
  • Sundtimen - practical info about the week ahead and a place where we address issues that concern all students

In addition to the study trips, all Sund students travel on at least two joint trips each year.

Get-to-know-you tour in the mountains

During the first few weeks, everyone at the school goes on a get-to-know-you trip. The purpose is simple: as you can imagine, we're going to try to get to know each other a little better, both students and staff. Often it's better to do this away from school, while creating experiences together.

A mountain trip where we spend two nights in the mountains. We take a bus about an hour from the school. We go for a walk, and get to know each other both on the hike over the mountain and not least in the togetherness at the cabin and in the shelters around the cabin. We live in a large cabin with beds for most people. Those who want to build a shelter and live outside the cabin can also stay in a tent. We go hiking, we cook together, we sing, compete, enjoy ourselves and just - we get to know each other.

It's simply a great start to the school year.

Closing trip to Sør-Gjæslingan

The second big joint trip is towards the end of the school year. Then we travel to Sør-Gjæslingan . It's a protected fishing village on the Namdals coast and is an hour by speedboat from Namsos.

We stay three nights, live in cabins, fish, cook on bonfires and play pranks in the bright Trøndelag nights. We simply enjoy the surroundings and each other. It's a great way to end the year, for both students and staff.

It's hard to describe how beautiful Sør-Gjæslingan really is. You simply have to come along and see for yourself.
