Jazz

During the many years of the jazz program at Sund folk high school , a thorough and self-developing learning environment has been developed, where interaction, musicality and craftsmanship are the main factors in the teaching.

Many of today's best rhythmic musicians spend a year at Sund folk high school , and that's no coincidence. Here you get to work in a concentrated way with already talented students and committed teachers.

The methodology that forms the basis of our teaching is practical and ear-based, where the path between what you hear, what you want to play and the craftsmanship to perform is as short as possible. Time is precious, and we want the results to be achieved quickly and constructively. That's why we need to customize the curriculum for each individual student, group-wise and instrument-wise.

In brief:

  • Skilled teachers and students
  • Interaction and improvisation
  • Audio-based learning
  • Develop your own expression

More about this program

Professional program

The interaction and dynamics at Jazzlinja are crucial to creating an optimal year at Sund folk high school . We put together a class of musicians who we believe will complement each other in the best possible way. Initiatives to organize tours, concert series and jam sessions are highly appreciated.

During the course, we focus a lot on ear-based learning, which includes singing chords and clapping polyrhythms. We also work with jazz theory, improvisation exercises and self-expression, and place great emphasis on interaction in both small and large groups. We often arrange concerts for each other and for the rest of the school.

Teachers and guest teachers

The main teachers at Jazzlinja for the school year 2024/2025 are bassist Ola Høyer and saxophonist Mona Krogstad. Both are active performing musicians who are also passionate about creating an inspiring jazz environment at Sund folk high school . Throughout the year, we also invite guest teachers to hold workshops, masterclasses and lead project weeks with the jazz students.

We work closely with the Department of Music at NTNU in Trondheim . Every year we organize a week where jazz and practical students from NTNU come to Sund to exchange experiences and play together. The short distance to Trondheim also gives us the opportunity to arrange several concerts and receive visits from guest teachers from the dynamic jazz community in the city.

Inderøy Jazzforum & Soddjazzfestivalen

Inderøy Jazzforum , one of Norway's most exciting jazz clubs, organizes varied concerts almost every week with top international artists. The concert program is adapted to the school year at Sund folk high school , and the jazz students are often actively involved in the planning and implementation of these events.

In the spring, the Soddjazz festival is arranged, where the jazz class participates as organizers and volunteers, and gains valuable experience in contributing to a larger jazz festival.

Tour with Jazzlinja at Sund

Every year, the jazz line at Sund embarks on a two-week tour, where the class is responsible for all the planning and execution - with complete freedom to shape the tour itself. This is often one of the highlights of the year and one of the most educational periods. In addition to creating their own concert, students learn how to book gigs, apply for funding and organize the logistics of a tour. At Sund folk high school you not only get musical development, but also a thorough introduction to what it means to be a professional musician, with all aspects of the profession. In recent years, Jazzlinja has released albums after their tour, check out the bands Sundesthestia , Sundconcious , Sundavind or Sundship on streaming services!

Rio de Janeiro

The destination for the jazz line's study trip varies from year to year, and in 2025 the trip will be to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In recent years, we've traveled to Greece and Serbia, where we were joined by musician Jovan Pavlovic, originally from Serbia but now living in Norway. The study trip provides valuable inspiration, where music, experiences and professional exchange are in focus. We participate in workshops, play concerts and jam sessions in clubs, and in the evenings we create unforgettable musical encounters. Students have the opportunity to explore new cultures and connect with engaging people from different parts of the world.

Previously, the jazz class has been on a study trip to Brazil. Here is a video made by student David Phan from the study trip to Brazil in 2019:

The year at Sund was super important for me, both in terms of developing my instrument, but also socially. A year I feel I could not have done without.

Erik Wie Flaig

Jazz
I didn't realize the impact of being around music, musicians and friends 24/7 until after I finished. Being around music every day as much as we were is something I think you only get at Sund. I found that I and everyone else in the class had an extreme development as a musician and person during the year.

Nikolai Hansli

Jazz
At Sund I learned so much. Musically yes, but also so much about making friendships, living with others and just elementary things you can overlook, like breathing a little or just looking at small changes in the seasons. It was really magical to be able to have a year with so much music and wonderful memories. I will always be grateful for that!

Runa Kirby Torbo

Jazz
This school year has been absolutely great. I've had a huge improvement on my instrument and become much more confident in playing together, but the best thing about this year was really everything else. I've learned so much about things I didn't know I wanted to learn about.

What former students say

I don't know if I dare say it, but I've learned things I'll never forget that have nothing to do with music. Tolerance towards different people, patience and understanding. I've confirmed who I am and my values. Not only in others, but also in myself.
